STP Greatest Hits Album Due Out

Amid their tour with Red Hot Chili Peppers and "Sour Girl" inhabiting the airwaves, STP has made plans to release a greatest hits album in October, tentatively titled "Big Bang Babies". The album will contain 16 or 17 songs, which includes 12 to 13 of their greatest hits and at least 4 new tracks which the band will head to a New York Studio to record (with longtime producer, Brendan O'brien). Among those four new songs are possibly "You Can't Drive Me Away" and "Heed the Water Whisperer". The group is also writing material on the road for their 5th album, which is scheduled for a Spring/Summer 2001 release.

Judge Lays Smackdown on Napster

The fears of every American teenager became a reality today as U.S. District Judge, Marilyn Hall Patel, ordered that MP3 trading company, Napster, be shut down effective midnight, Friday (Pacific Time). The shutdown, which has come after months of legal dispute, will last until a future trial on the matter. "The decision will pave the way for the future of online music," said Cary Sherman, a lawyer representing the RIAA. "This once again establishes that the rules of the road are the same online as they are offline, and sends a strong message to others that they cannot build a business based on others copyrighted work without permission." However, . The judge also ordered the RIAA to post a $5 million bond requested against any financial losses Napster could suffer from being shut down temporarily. The news of the Napster shutdown has left millions racing to download that MacGyver theme song they never had the time to get.

A Perfect Circle to Headline Tour

After finishing their previous tour in which they opened for Nine Inch Nails, it has been announced that A Perfect Circle will headline their own tour starting August 18th, in Boston. The five-piece band, including Tool lead singer, Maynard James Keenan, will be touring in support of their debut album, "Mer De Noms". When asked how he maintains the same level of intensity onstage as he does in the studio, Keenan replied "The music is what took me there to begin with. As long as the music is there and the people that are playing are committed to pushing those rhythms and those notes and that geometry where it goes, you just go there."

However, despite all the success of A Perfect Circle, Keenan has not forgotten the group that got him where he is today; Tool. After A Perfect Circle's wraps up their tour in late September, the singer plans to rejoin his original bandmates to finish writing and recording their long awaited follow-up to "Ćnima".

Metallica's Music Was "Hijacked", Claims Ulrich

Appearing before a Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich, claimed that the popular MP3 sharing software, Napster, "hijacked our (Metallica's) music without asking." Also, in order to demonstrate the ease at which an individual can download the songs through Napster, Senator Orin Hatch downloaded a Creed MP3 during the hearing. Ulrich went on to state that, "With Napster, every song by every artist is available for download at no cost, and of course with no payment to the artist, the songwriter, or the copyright holder." Ulrich continued, "If you're not fortunate enough to own a computer, there is only one way to assemble a music collection the equivalent of a Napster user: theft." Many have already fallen victim to Urlich's legal crusade, such as SNN President, Drew Snyder (Visit www.snydernews.net for the full story).

Also present at the hearing was Napster CEO, Hank Barry, who had this to say in his company's defense: "Napster's success reflects [a] love of music. Napster does not copy files. It does not provide the technology for copying files. Napster does not make MP3 files. It does not transfer files. Napster simply facilitates communication among people interested in music. ... Napster is helping, not hurting, the recording and music publishing industry and artists." Studies have shown that Napster users buy more records as a result of using the program, and sampling music is their main reason for using Napster. This news was obtained through Sonicnet.

Weiland Lends Services to Limp Bizkit

Putting past their past differences aside, Stone Temple Pilots lead singer, Scott Weiland and Limp Bizkit are in the studio at work on the group's third full-length release, "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water". "There is one song in particular that I think is beautiful that Fred and I worked on together," said Weiland on STP's official site. "We actually perform together on the song." This marks the second time Weiland has helped the metal-rap band, as he also helped write last summer's "Significant Other", which included performing on the song, "Nobody Like You" alongside Durst and Johnathan Davis of Korn.

Tragedy Strikes Pearl Jam Show

On Friday, June 30th, at least 8 fans were crushed to death at a Pearl Jam show in Rosklide, Denmark. The fans, all men, reportedly slipped on muddy ground and were immediately crushed by a massive surge of the crowd. 26 people were injured, and the Cure, who were scheduled to take stage after Pearl Jam in the Rosklide Rock and Dance Festival that night, cancelled their performance. "When you agree to play at a festival of this size and reputation it is impossible to imagine such a heart-wrenching scenario," Pearl Jam said in a statement afterwards. "Our lives will never be the same, but we know that is nothing compared to the grief of the families and friends of those involved. It is so tragic ... there are no words."

Presidents Reunite In Studio

Despite announcing their "retirement" less than three years ago, the Presidents of the United States of America have reformed to record a studio album by the name of "Freaked Out And Small", due out September 12th. However, the group does not plan to follow recording with a tour of any kind. "We're not going to do the reunion, get back together thing. It would be more of a commitment than I want to make. It's just a record project with two people I love to play with," said singer, bassist, Chris Bellew. The album's first single, "Jupiter" is available for download at www.musicblitz.com. Weezer Steals Show at Warped Tour

After being nearly forgotten by the rest of the world, Weezer appeared at Chula Vista, California's date on the Warped Tour, stealing the show from the tour's big name band, Green Day. In the appearance, which was a surprise to many of the 11,000 at hand, Weezer rocked the parking lot venu with a setlist that included most of their radio hits. "I didn't even know Weezer was going to be here!" Jacob Reed, 20, of Oceanside, Calif., said. "Now my ticket is totally worth the price. To be honest, I was getting kind of sick of listening to the same three chords all day long." Thanks goes to Sonicnet for the news.
